Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) are fairly common and widespread in the United States, and often found in small flocks on shores and in fields. Their double dark breast bands and orange rumps are very distinctive. They are a medium-sized plover, measuring about 10.5 inches in length and about 3.3 ounces in weight. They forage for food in fields, shorelands and mudflats, most commonly eating insects.

This Killdeer foraging on a large grassy field was photographed at Croton Point Park in Croton, New York on 6-26-2015. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image.
